DIY Washi Tea Lights
Here is an easy DIY washi tea lights idea. If you know me you know I love washi tape. I am always looking for a way to brighten dull things up with bold patterns.
One of my wedding gifts was this cute jar filled with different colored tea lights. They have sat in this jar for 2 1/2 years now. I was in my office looking for some paperwork and saw the jar of tea lights. Wham, inspiration hit. Tea lights + washi tape = bold tea lights. An easy way to add color to your home decor.
Not only are these tea lights adorable, they are thrifty. Tea lights can be found at the dollar store, walmart or craft stores. Find them on sale and grab your washi tape.
Simply wrap the washi tape around the tea lights.
Mix and match patterns and tea light colors. Have some fun and decorate for spring.
Stack ’em. Light ’em. Share ’em.
Stripes, lattice, damask. OH MY. LOVE.
They are soo adorable when they are lit up. I love a little candlelight now and then. It adds a romantic ambiance.
Throw them all in a dish and keep the tea light party coming!!!

This is adorable. Where is all your fun/bright washi from?? I love the colors. Also Emily, how do you get it to go in a straight line? I tried covering a jar the other day but couldn’t get it to go straight.
Megan, I just try and get it lined up and then you kind of have to make it keep going straight which results in a couple of little bump spots here and there, but you can’t really notice them. It kind of reminded me of when we were putting the vinyl on those tumblers at Expressions Vinyl. You have to sort of compensate for the curve if that makes any sense. Hope that helps!!!

Those are adorable. I’m seeing more and more uses for washi tape – love them all. Washi tape is still hard to find in Canada. Even Michael’s doesn’t carry it yet (they hadn’t even heard of it when I asked), but I found a specialty shop in Toronto that had some so I got a few rolls a few weeks ago for the first time. I used some turquoise gingham washi tape to make the words on my daughter’s Easter-in-a-box that I sent to her at university. I think this is an absolutely adorable idea. I actually just tried doing this on some tealights I made for a friend’s wedding. However, I just test burned a few of them, and after a while of burning (once the wax was mostly melted), the washi tape started peeling off. =( Did you have this problem when you burned them? Any ideas how to keep this from happening?
Maybe try mod podging the tape down. I haven’t tried this, but washi tape isn’t super sticky so giving it a little more sticky help, might keep it from peeling off. Thanks for stopping by!!!

That was an excellent idea!! I just tried putting a dab of mod podge down along the seam… and I just did a test burn, and they aren’t unraveling! Thanks so much!! =D

questions for ya —
been searching around looking for an answer — how do you get the washi to stick to the tealight. i’ve made a few small batches, and the ends always unstick and they look a mess. i’ve tried different tealights – different tapes — what gives?

I’m not sure. I know washi tape isn’t the most adhesive tape, maybe try adding some pressure as you apply it. I haven’t had a problem with it on the tealights, but I have on other things. Sorry I don’t have a better answer.

I can’t seem to get the ends to stick…what am I doing wrong?
Try to apply pressure, I’m not sure if you are doing anything wrong. Sometimes the tape just isn’t super sticky. Maybe try a bit of Mod Podge to seal it.
