Decoden Key Chain
You know I love glitter, jewels and pearls. They are some of my favorite things. I’ve got great news, all of my (or your) favorite things can come together through the art of decoden with Mod Podge Collage Clay. My first decoden project is this amazing decoden key chain. I love it, plus it was a quick and easy craft.
Supplies list (Find all this great stuff at a Michael’s Store):
- Mod Podge Mod Melts
- Mod Podge Mod Molds
- Mod Podge Collage Clay
- trinkets (I used the molds to create jewels, pearls, glitter)
- Old Keychain (Mine was a photo keychain and I put a cute scrapbook paper in to show through on the other side)
You may be wondering what decoden is. Decoden is the art of decorating anything with trinkets, and “the more the merrier” is the name of the game in designing an over the top look in this 3D collage technique (check out the neat ideas below). I love that it is everything thrown together. There are no rules. Just have fun and create. Check out this video for more on how to use these products.
To start my key chain I used this awesome jewel mold. I love gems. The glitter mod melts were perfect for creating gems. Or if glitter isn’t your thing they come in lots of colors and metallics.
To make the jewels use a high temp mini glue gun. Heat up the glue gun with a mod melt inserted and work the glue into the mold staring at the middle and working toward the edges. Leave to dry/cool for ten minutes. This is a great time to go read a chapter in a book (I did and loved it). When they are cool simply pop out and trim off any excess.
Once the jewels were created I added some pearls and created my design. Laying it out before helped me visualize my end product.
Then grab the collage clay. It is like frosting for crafting (DO NOT EAT!!! Collage Clay is not recommended for children ages 12 and under, and the product is not edible. Small parts are a choking hazard for children). Pick a tip and screw onto the collage clay. It comes in two hot colors, vanilla white and strawberry pink).
Since I was doing a small area I covered the entire surface with the collage clay using the star tip and twisting it as I applied it.
Push trinkets into collage clay. I sprinkled a touch of glitter after all the trinkets were placed. Leave to dry. Depending on the humidity it can dry fast within 10 to 20 minutes or may take a couple of days.
When it is all dry, add your keys and make a fun statement with your very own decoden style key chain.
If pearls and jewels aren’t your thing, don’t worry there are lots of different themes for the mod molds and customize it with all your very own special trinkets. Mod melts can also be painted or stained.
