This freebie is a black and white stencil featuring a detailed horse head silhouette set inside a heart shape. You print it, tape it on, and trace it right onto your pumpkin. No drawing skills needed, which is a huge relief for those of us who can barely draw a stick figure.

Using this printable stencil is easier than you’d think, even if your pumpkin carving kit has been sitting untouched in the garage since last October. Clean out the insides of the pumpkin. Next, start by printing the pattern at full size on regular paper. Next, cut around the outer edges to make the design easier to handle.

Then, tape the paper onto your pumpkin, right where you want the horse to sit. After that, use a pin or a toothpick to poke tiny holes along all the lines. This step is honestly my favorite part because it’s oddly satisfying, and it gives you a perfect pumpkin outline to follow once the paper comes off.

Finally, grab your carving tool of choice and carefully cut along the dotted lines. Go slow through the thicker areas of the design. And remember, a carving tool is still a sharp object, so keep little hands away from that part and let a grown-up handle the actual cutting.

Best Knives for Pumpkin Carving (a Pumpkin Carving Kit):

These kits typically include a variety of tools such as serrated saws, scoops, and etching tools. They are specifically designed for pumpkin carving, making them safer and more effective than regular kitchen knives.

Serrated Knife:

A small, serrated sharp knife is perfect for cutting through the tough skin of the pumpkin. Ensure it’s sharp to make clean cuts and precise shapes.

Scoop or Spoon:

A sturdy scoop, ice cream scoop, or large spoon helps in removing the seeds and pulp from inside of the pumpkin. Look for one with a comfortable handle and a sharp edge for scraping the sides clean.

Scooping Glove:

For more advanced designs, a drill with different-sized bits can help create perfect circles and unique textures on your pumpkin. A drill can also be handy for cleaning out the inside of a pumpkin. attach a electric hand mixer beater to the drill and use it to scrap the insides clean.

Tea Lights:

After you carve the best pumpkin, you will want to light it up. Instead of lighting a candle inside consider a battery operated tea light for a pumpkin light. You can even find ones that flicker for the traditional candle effect.

Dry Erase Marker or Sharpie:

After punching holes you can use a marker to connect dots to ensure precise cuts to your pumpkin stencils.
