What Are Candy Cane Seeds?

Candy cane seeds are just peppermints or mint Tic Tacs with a cute label. You know, the little mints with red and white stripes, like starlight mints? They look just like tiny seeds when you pour them into a bag. That makes them perfect for this sweet little trick!

This free set includes gift tags and bag toppers that say “Candy Cane Seeds.” First, you print them on white card stock. Next, you fill a small bag with mints or paste the tag on a box of  Tic Tac mints. Then, you add the tag, and you’re done! It’s one of those easy Christmas crafts that comes together in minutes.

Why You’ll Love This Idea

First of all, this is pure magic of Christmas for little kids. My two still talk about the year their candy canes “grew” overnight. Kids love to check the cup every morning. Watching their faces light up is honestly the best part of the whole thing!

Plus, it’s a great way to give a sweet treat on a budget. Candy canes and mints cost next to nothing. On top of that, the PDF files are free, so you get a cute gift at no extra cost. Teachers and busy parents can make a whole class set in one evening! It’s also a great opportunity to slow down and enjoy some simple craft projects together. 🙌

How to Use the Candy Cane Seeds Printable

Getting started is so simple. To download, head to the end of the post and enter your name and email address in the dark green download box. Check your inbox for the free printable. Next, print the PDF templates on standard US letter size paper or card stock. Then, cut out each tag along the lines. After that, fill small bags with peppermints and staple or tape a bag topper on top. If you use Tic Tacs, just tape a tag to the front of the box.

Now for the fun part! Have your kids “plant” the seeds in a cup filled with sugar. Then, send them off to bed. While they sleep, swap a few mints for mini candy canes (or give it a day or two). A few days later, swap those for full-size candy canes. As a result, it looks like the seeds grew all on their own. Talk about a sweet surprise!

Fun Ways to Use This Printable

These little tags work for so many Christmas activities. You can tuck them into stockings or hand them out at parties. Here are a few more ideas we love:

  • Classroom activities: Hand out a bag to each student before winter break.
  • Sunday school or children’s ministry: Pair the seeds with a short lesson about growing faith.
  • Neighbor gifts: Leave a bag on the porch with a plate of cookies. 🍪
  • Elf on the Shelf: Let your elf bring candy cane seeds from the North Pole.
  • Class parties: Use them as a fun craft station for kids to assemble.

Variations to Try

Want to switch things up? Try planting the seeds in a small pot of dirt instead of sugar. Then, stick a full candy cane in the pot after a few days. It looks like a real little garden! Kids will want to water it, so maybe keep a towel handy.

Another option is to let kids decorate their own candy cane cups. Grab some construction paper, markers, and stickers. As a bonus, this helps build fine motor skills during the Christmas season. You can even plan a whole afternoon of easy candy cane crafts. For example, kids can cut a paper candy cane shape and hang it on bulletin boards.

Finally, make a bigger version for the whole family. Fill a large mason jar with mints and add a tag on top. Then, set it out on Christmas Eve as part of your Christmas decorations.
