Kite Embroidery Hoop Art

At the first of the month, I shared about a super fun Back to School Series going on at The Ribbon Retreat. Each day a fabulous blogger shared a project revolving around each letter of the alphabet. I was given the letter “K.” I am so happy to share with you my “K” project! It was a hard letter, but in the end I choose to keep it simple and go with the word “kite” for my inspiration. I incorporated it into a kite embroidery hoop art. Plus it includes the line, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”

To get started let’s gather some supplies most you can get at The Ribbon Retreat:

• white Kona solid fat quarter
• two coordinating fabrics (I used fabrics from the Penelope Line)
• 8″ embroidery hoop
• embroidery thread
• moonstich ribbon (5 yards)
• hot glue gun and glue
• iron on interfacing
• needle
• scissors
• iron

Start by gathering supplies. Iron all fabrics. With the moonstitch ribbon glue the end to the top of the outer hoop of the embroidery hoop. Wrap the ribbon tightly around the hoop. Glue again at the other end.

Print out the pattern and cut out the kite triangle pieces. Pin the kite pieces to a small piece of fabric on top of interfacing (follow the directions for your specific interfacing). Cut out one of the top triangles and one of the bottom triangles in each fabric. 

Place the pattern underneath the white fat quarter to trace the letters and kite tail. 

Iron on the kite triangles using iron on interfacing.

Fix the hoop onto the fabric with the design in the center. Thread the needle with embroidery thread. Use a running stitch to stitch on the words and the kite tail. This is just an easy up down stitch following the pattern. Be sure to tie off ends at the start and end.

When finished retighten the fabric and tighten the hoop.

Cut off excess fabric around the hoop.

Glue the fabric into the back side of the hoop and cover the back with a white felt for a more finished look. Use hot glue to secure the felt to the hoop.

And there you have it. Super easy and super cute!

It just reminds me of Mary Poppins. I really love the show and the song, Let’s Go Fly a Kite. 

Don’t worry about the running stitch being perfect. It makes it more unique. I love that it doesn’t have to be perfect, just adorable.

To mix it up, add other colors of embroidery thread or add a cloud or two.
