Apple Butter

How to make a simple apple butter recipe.

Ingredients

  • 10 medium sized apples - preferably Honeycrisp Granny Smith or Gala (or a mix)
  • 1 c brown sugar
  • ¾ c sugar
  • 1 T cinnamon
  • ½ t salt
  • ¼ t cloves
  • 1 T vanilla or vanilla bean paste

Instructions

  • Dice the apples into ½ or smaller pieces. Peeling is optional.
  • Place the apples into the bottom of a slow cooker.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon, salt, cloves and vanilla. Whisk to combine.
  • Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and toss to combine.
  • Cover with the lid and heat over low for 10-12 hours. Stir occasionally.
  • Apples should be tender. Transfer the apples and juices to a blender (in batches if needed) and blend until smooth.
  • Divide between storage containers and store in the fridge.

Notes

Storage: Apple butter that is not properly canned in canning jars should be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
