Have fun and work those tiny hand muscles with all of my free printable playdough mats here.

Fall Playdough Mats are my new favorite way to keep little hands busy this season! 🍂 You know those afternoons when everyone gets cranky, and dinner feels miles away? That’s exactly when I pull these out. My two kids squish, roll, and giggle for a good long while. Honestly, it feels like a tiny miracle every time.

What Are These Playdough Printables?
This free set includes eight cozy autumn playdough mats. Each page says “I can make a” at the top, with a cute fall picture in the middle. At the bottom, kids trace the name of the picture. So they build with dough and practice writing, all on one page!
Here’s what you’ll find inside. First, there’s an acorn, an apple basket, and a bale of hay. Next, you get a red leaf and a yellow leaf. Finally, the set wraps up with a pumpkin, a rake, and a sunny sunflower. 🌻

Why You’ll Love This Idea
First of all, these mats take zero prep. Just print, grab some dough, and you’re done! Plus, they keep kids busy so you can drink your coffee while it’s still hot. ☕ Seriously, that’s a win in my book.
Beyond the fun, this activity is sneaky learning. Rolling and pinching dough builds fine motor skills and hand strength. Meanwhile, the tracing words add a little early literacy and handwriting practice. Teachers love these mats for preschool and kindergarten centers, too. Even better, kids get great sensory play without a giant mess. Well, mostly! 😉

Print and Protect
First, print the mats on cardstock for extra sturdiness. Then, slip each page into a sheet protector or run it through a laminator. This step keeps the dough from sticking and lets you reuse the mats all season. Trust me, it saves so much paper!
Gather Your Supplies
Next, grab dough in fall colors like orange, brown, red, yellow, and green. Store-bought works great. However, homemade playdough costs very little if you have flour and salt on hand. You’ll also want a dry-erase marker for the tracing words. 🎃
Build, Then Trace
Lastly, let your kids pick a mat and read the words at the top together. Show them how to roll a snake or a ball to get them going. Once they finish building, they can trace the word at the bottom. After that, simply wipe the page clean and pick a new one!

Ways to Use These Printable Playdough Mats
There’s no wrong way to play with these! Here are a few of our favorite ideas. Pick one or try them all.
- Quiet time: Set out a mat during quiet time or while you cook dinner.
- Busy bins: Tuck the mats into a busy bin with dough and a marker for a grab-and-go activity.
- Classroom centers: Add them to a preschool or kindergarten fine motor or writing center.
- Fall party table: Keep little guests happy at a harvest party or Thanksgiving kids’ table. 🍁
- On the go: Pack a mat and a mini tub of dough for waiting rooms and long car rides.

Variations to Try
Count and Build
Turn the mats into a math game. For example, ask your kids to fill the apple basket with five apples. Or, have them add seeds to the sunflower. Roll a die to decide how many pieces to make. It’s counting practice that doesn’t feel like work!
Use Loose Parts
Instead of dough, try buttons, dried beans, or real leaves from the yard. Kids can arrange them right on the mats. Just keep small items away from little ones who still put things in their mouths.
Practice Colors
Talk about colors as kids build. The red leaf and yellow leaf make an easy start. Then, ask them what color dough fits the pumpkin, the acorn, or the hay.
Take a Nature Walk
Head outside and hunt for real acorns, leaves, and sunflowers. When you get home, match each find to its mat. Kids love seeing the real thing next to their dough version!

Common Questions About Fall Playdough Mats
What age are these mats best for?
They work best for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners, even in early elementary grades. Toddlers love squishing the dough into place. Older kids can tackle the tracing words and add fun details. Just watch younger kids closely during play.
Do I need to laminate them?
No, you don’t have to. However, laminating makes them last much longer. Plus, you can wipe off the tracing and use them again and again. Sheet protectors make a cheap fix if you don’t own a laminator.
How do I keep playdough from sticking?
First, make sure the dough isn’t too wet. Kneading in a little flour helps a lot. Also, wipe the mats with a damp cloth when playtime ends.
Can I use these in my classroom?
Yes! They’re perfect for centers, morning tubs, and indoor recess. Print a set for each table so nobody has to wait. Your students will love building and tracing their favorite fall things.
