Have you ever had a kid beg to hug the elf? Mine ask every single year. 🥹 Of course, the rules say no touching. That’s exactly why I made this elf on the shelf show me around printable. Now your kids can bring their favorite elf along for the day, magic and all!

What Is the Show Me Around Elf Tag?
This free printable elf tag is one of the easiest printable props around. It pairs with a clear jar or cup with a lid. First, your elf climbs inside the jar. Then, you set the tag right beside it or tie it on with ribbon. Across the top, it says “Show Me Around” in big, cheerful letters. Below that, your elf shares a sweet little shelf poem:
I’ve squeezed inside, all snug and sound,so you can carry me around.I’m safe in here, so it’s okay;let’s have a merry elf-tastic day!
At the bottom, feel free to sign the elf’s name if you like. It adds a personal touch from your own elf. You know, just in case the kids question the handwriting! 😉

Why You’ll Love This Easy Elf Idea
First of all, it solves a real problem. Kids want to hold their elf so badly. However, nobody wants a tearful morning over lost Christmas magic. This jar trick keeps the elf safe while the kids feel included. It’s a win for everyone!
On top of that, it’s a simple idea with almost zero prep. You just print the tag, grab a jar, and tuck your little elf inside. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite shelf ideas for a busy weeknight. Plus, it gives the whole family lots of fun on a lazy weekend. My two kids still talk about the day our elf rode along to the grocery store! 🛒

How to Use Your Elf on the Shelf Show Me Around Printable
Getting set up is super easy. First, download the printable PDF file by entering your name and email address in the dark green download box. An email will come to your inbox with the poem, then print it at home. Next, cut out the tag along the edges. Like all my free printables, regular paper works fine. For extra durability, though, print it on cardstock. 🎄
Then, find a clear jar, cup, or container with a lid. A mason jar or a clean deli container is the perfect size for most elves. Gently place your adorable elf inside, and close the lid tight. After that, set the tag beside the jar. Or, punch a hole in the corner and tie it on with ribbon or twine.
Finally, put the jar somewhere the kids will spot it right away. The kitchen table or a spot under the Christmas tree works great. When they wake up, they’ll read the note and realize they get to carry their elf around. Cue the happy squeals! 🎉

What If My Elf Doesn’t Fit?
Every elf is a little different. If yours is too tall, try a large plastic cup with a lid. A clear treat container also makes a fun alternative. Just make sure the lid snaps on all the way.

Fun Ways to Use This Printable
Need some elf inspiration? Here are a few of my favorite ideas:
- Elf’s arrival: Use it on December 1st so the new elf can tour the house on the first day.
- Holiday errands: Bring the jar along to look at Christmas lights or visit Santa Claus.
- Good deeds day: Let the elf tag along while the kids deliver cookies to neighbors.
- Classroom helper: Teachers can let one student carry the class scout elf each day as a reward for good behavior.
- Tired-mom night: Pull it out when you’re fresh out of new ideas. No judgment here!

Variations to Try
Want to switch it up? Add a sweet treat to the jar too. Mini marshmallows or a few chocolate chips make the ride extra cozy. However, your elf might snack his way through the whole day! 🍪
You can also decorate the jar. Wrap the lid with washi tape or add a tiny bow on top. I used some patterned scrapbook paper to cut out a decorative lid for my mason jar. Or you can even make a mini sleeping bag from an old sock for the ride.
Another idea? Pair it with other printable activities, like a photo scavenger hunt. Kids can snap pictures of every spot they show the elf. Later, the elf can leave shelf notes about his favorite part of the elf adventures.

Common Questions About the Show Me Around Elf
Can kids really carry the elf in the jar?
Yes! They can hold the jar, but not the elf. That’s the best part! The lid keeps the magic safe, so your elf can still fly back to the North Pole that night.
Is this printable really free?
Absolutely! This free download is for personal use. Just pop your email into the form below. Then, check your inbox for the link.

When is the best time to use it?
Any day works just fine. However, weekends and school breaks make the best time since kids are home. It’s also a great way to kick off the holiday season. Teachers with classroom scout elves love it on Fridays, too.
Can I sign my elf’s name on the tag?
Of course! There’s room right at the bottom for the elf’s name. For extra fun, sign it with your opposite hand so it looks like true elf writing.
